Bisexual squid species isn't picky about mate
Meeting girls is tough if you're a male squid living in the deep, dark waters off the coast of California. You may run across your own species only rarely ? and when you do, the deep-sea gloom makes it hard to tell whether your new pal is a guy or gal.
But one squid species has come up with a work-around to this matchmaking problem, a new study finds. The eight-armed lotharios simply mate with any squid of their species that crosses their path. If that means wasting some sperm on male-to-male matings, the squid don't seem to mind.
This same-sex squid behavior can't necessarily be taken as more evidence of homosexual bonding in the wild, according to study researcher Henk-Jan Hoving, a postdoctoral researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, Calif. Rather, the squid seem to mate indiscriminately out of necessity.

"In addition to the dark habitat the animals live in, the animals only reproduce once, encounters with partners are few and far between, and mating is probably rapid," Hoving wrote in an email to LiveScience from a research vessel off the U.S. West Coast. "We think the high frequency of male matings is the result of a combination of all the above factors." [ Top 10 Swingers of the Animal Kingdom ]
Same-sex squid
The squid in question, Octopoteuthis deletron, is a medium-size creature whose body can grow to about 6.5 inches long. Little is known about the squid's life cycle, because O. deletron is relatively rare, and its deep-sea habitat hardly invites observation.
But by using remotely operated vehicles, scientists were able to capture images of 108 O. deletron squid in the Monterey Submarine Canyon off California's coast between 1992 and 2011. The squid were cruising waters from 1,300 to about 2,600 feet deep.
For many of the animals, the footage wasn't clear enough to determine the squid's sex. But 39 of the squid could be sorted into male and female. It was here that Hoving and his colleagues made a curious discovery: The same number of male and female squid showed evidence of a recent amorous run-in with a male. [ See images of squid ]
This evidence took the shape of spermatangia, little sacs of sperm that male squid deposit onto the female during mating. These packets inject sperm into the female's body. The packaging remains attached to her skin, signaling she has mated recently.

Males were just as likely to be found sprinkled with empty spermatangia packets as females, the researchers reported Sept. 20 in the journal Biology Letters. Nine males and 10 females had spermatangia packets dotting their bodies.
Mysterious squid
The packets were placed in areas out of the reach of the males' own penises, suggesting they hadn't accidentally inseminated themselves. More likely, Hoving and his colleagues wrote, is that it's simply less costly for squid to waste some sperm on same-sex mating than it is to evolve elaborate courtship behavior to pick out fertile females.
The squid live solitary lives, Hoving and his colleagues wrote, and may run into members of their species only rarely. Thus it may make sense to grab any chance to mate.
Little is known about the deep-sea squid lifestyle, Hoving said, so it would be useful to do DNA testing on sperm packets to find out how many males are mating with females and males. Beyond that, he said, much about the species is a mystery. He and his colleagues are currently trying to find out how long O. deletron lives.

One response specifically asked for my subscribers? opinions.
It was from a man who shared his experience closely related to the topic discussed.
In this case, he is the one who is afraid of being hurt in a relationship with his girlfriend, and he wanted to share his story with my subscribers and get women?s opinions on what?s going on in this relationship.
Perhaps you are in a situation with a man who is afraid of being hurt. Or maybe you were on the receiving end of a situation such as his.
He would like to hear your thoughts on his situation.
We, women aren?t the only ones who are confused by the behavior of our partners.
Men, similarly to us, are often puzzled and want to know the reasons for their partner?s behavior.
Here is an email from this man who wished to remain anonymous, so for the purpose of this article we?ll call him Ken (not his real name).
He writes:
?Hi Elaine,
I stumbled across your blog looking for answers to my confusing situation with the woman I have been seeing for a couple of months.
When we first met she had just broken up with her ex boyfriend.
Her ex is a total loser who at the age of thirty doesn?t have a job and has been living with his parents ever since she kicked him out of her house.
She swore that she was done with this guy.
For two months our relationship was great. We were getting very close and I thought we were headed toward something serious.
I am at the point in my life where I am looking for my future wife. I am 40, I have two children who visit with me on weekends, have a stable job in the construction field and I am taking night classes at the local community college.
I have played the field long enough and am ready for a real relationship leading to marriage.
I really thought she was The One.
We had great connection and intimate conversations. We did all kinds of things together. We went to parties at her friends and at the country club where she owns a house.
I even started playing golf and tennis with her which was something I have never done before.
I even introduced her to my children (she doesn?t have her own children).
She is a beautiful woman and very successful in her professional career. But that wasn?t why I was with her.
What I liked about her was that she was very humble about the material things and her education and financial success. She also didn?t care about the fact that I am living in a studio apartment, drive an old truck and am taking night classes at the local community college to get my GED.
Despite our differences we were getting very close and got serious quickly.
After two months of dating she suddenly did a complete turn-around and announced that she was going to give her ex boyfriend a second chance.
After what she had told me about him I thought there was no way she would get back together with this loser.
According to her he treated her like crap and with complete disrespect.
I was very hurt and wanted an explanation. She said they had a history together and she couldn?t just throw it away.
After that, we were still talking, and she told me how her ex was acting after they got back together. To me it sounded like he was still treating her with disrespect.
But she was back with him, and I didn?t want to be a second fiddle. After a painful struggle I stopped calling her as my friends had suggested.
A week later she called me and said she was confused about what she wanted and wasn?t sure who she wanted to be with. She said she liked me and still wanted to date me and get to know me slowly (that was after we had an intense sexual relationship for two months! And suddenly she wants to take it slow?)
She said that perhaps there is someone out there for all of us (meaning that there was someone else out there for her, for me, and for her ex).
I don?t know what to do at this point.
I have very strong feelings for this woman and hope that we can work things out. But at the same time she is still seeing her ex and is not ready to break it off.
I hope that she will see that I am The One for her. My question is ? Should I stick around hoping that she will chose me over her ex eventually?
I don?t want to get hurt again if she eventually chooses her ex over me.
I told her to figure out things with her ex and come back to me when she is ready to end it with him. I don?t want to share the woman I have feelings for with someone else.
I have deleted her phone number so I won?t be tempted to call her. My friends say that if I give her space she will realize what she?s lost and come back to me.
I think it may be a good suggestion, but at the same time I am afraid that if I stop contacting her she will think I?ve lost interest and never come back to me.
Women are so confusing and are impossible to understand.
I would really like to know what goes on in a woman?s head when she does something like this.
I appreciate your response and hearing from other women!
Basically, my question is, if you are a woman who does something like this, why do you do this and what is going through your head when you do this?
And also, I?d like to know what is the best course of action to take to get her back?

Ex-wrestling exec to make 2nd Senate bid in Conn. (AP)
HARTFORD, Conn. ? Former wrestling executive Linda McMahon will make a second run for U.S. Senate in Connecticut.
In a statement released Monday, the Republican said she plans to kick off her campaign Tuesday in Southington at a business that designs and manufactures custom-built coil processing machines.
The former chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment ran against former Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in 2010, but lost after spending about $50 million of her own money on the race.
McMahon would face former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays in a potential 2012 GOP primary. Shays has already said he plans to officially announce his candidacy next month.
Both are hoping to fill the seat now held by independent Sen. Joe Lieberman. Several Democrats have already announced plans to run.

Intel demos Haswell-enabled, solar-powered computing at IDF 2011
During the IDF keynote today in San Francisco, Intel demoed a solar-powered PC running Windows based on its long-teased Haswell microarchitecture -- complete with labcoats and LOLcats. As a refresher, Haswell is based on the same 22nm technology as Ivy Bridge, reduces power by 20x compared to current designs, and will help Ultrabooks achieve ten days of connected standby by 2013. Intel's CEO Paul Otellini mentioned that Haswell will further accelerate Ultrabook innovation with the help of the company's revolutionary 3D tri-gate transistors. Heart Healthy Tip One ? Physical Activity. Get up and get moving! Set a goal of at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. Check with your doctor first, and create a fitness plan with guidance from your physician. Then get off the couch and move your body!
Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Take 3 ten minute walking breaks throughout the day. Park a little farther away in the parking lot and make yourself walk a little more. Get a pedometer and track your steps each day, and try to increase the numbers each week. Go for a swim or do some light jogging. Just get up and move! You?re working too hard if you are breathing so hard that you can?t carry on any kind of conversation. If that?s the case, slow it down a little and take it a bit easier. But don?t quit exercising.
Heart Healthy Tip Two ? Maintain A Healthy Weight. Being overweight puts extra stress on your body systems ? especially the heart. But for every 5-10 pounds that you lose, you can significantly improve your overall health. You will feel much better and your outlook may even improve.
Heart Healthy Tip Three ? Eat A Heart Healthy Diet. Eat smaller portions at meal time. Eat at least 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Limit your use of salt, and use other seasonings instead such as herbs, spices and lemon juice. Eat low-fat, lean meats. Eat fish at least twice per week (not deep fried!). Get rid of bad fats and use good fats instead, such as olive oil or canola oil instead of lard and butter.
Instead of 3 large meals per day, eat 5 or 6 smaller snack-like meals evenly spaced throughout the day ? don?t forget the fruits and vegetables! Reduce or eliminate sugary sweets, as well as starchy carbohydrates such as white bread, mashed potatoes and french fries. Instead eat whole grains such as whole grain wheat bread, or have sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes.
Bonus Heart Healthy Tip ? Quit Smoking. If you are a smoker, then it is time to quit now! Smoking increases your risk for a multitude of diseases, problems and issues such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes and of course, cancer (the number two killer, after heart disease). The longer you go without smoking the healthier your body becomes. Lungs begin to heal themselves as soon as you quit. Years after quitting, smoker?s lungs can be virtually as healthy as a non-smoker!

Clashes kill 12 in "liberated" southern Yemen city (Reuters)
ADEN (Reuters) ? Fighting between the Yemeni army and militants in and around the southern provincial capital of Zinjibar killed at least 12 people on Wednesday, just days after the government declared it had "liberated" the city from Islamist fighters.
An army official said seven militants and one soldier were killed in a suburb of the coastal city, which the army last week recaptured from Islamist fighters suspected of links to al Qaeda's Yemen-based branch.
Four more militants were killed in another part of Zinjibar.
"The militants snuck into the area to try to carry out a suicide attack, but the snipers from the army prevented them and killed seven extremists," said the military official.
Zinjibar, capital of the volatile Abyan province, was seized in May by militants calling themselves Ansar al-Sharia (partisans of Islamic law).
Residents said the army launched Katyusha rockets against pockets of insurgents in the city.

Cable recounts American's 1st contact in Cuba jail (AP)
HAVANA ? A USAID subcontractor sentenced to 15 years in jail in Cuba told an American diplomat soon after his arrest that authorities had interrogated him for two hours a day and were well aware of his activities on the island even before the questioning, according to a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable from Havana.
Maryland native Alan Gross also said he had health problems but asked the U.S. consular official to tell his loved ones he was in a good state of mind.
Gross asked the U.S. Interests Section in Havana to "relay to his family that his sense of humor is intact, that he is worried about them and that he wants his name kept out of the press," read the confidential dispatch from December 2009, leaked to WikiLeaks and separately obtained by The Associated Press.
Made public this week, it gave new details of U.S. consular officials' first access to Gross during a jailhouse visit more than three weeks after he was detained. Another cable shows a growing frustration among American officials who said they issued several requests before the Cuban government allowed them to see the prisoner.
Despite Gross' concerns about privacy, hundreds of news stories have been written about his arrest in early December 2009 and conviction earlier this year on charges of illegally importing banned communications equipment. His imprisonment has become a major sticking point between Cold War foes Washington and Havana, and dampened the prospects for improving relations.
Gross, 62, has said he was helping the island's tiny Jewish community improve its online capabilities, although Jewish leaders in Havana have denied working with him. Cuban officials including President Raul Castro have singled out the case to criticize U.S. democracy-building programs that they say fund subversive activity on the island and aim to undermine the communist government.
During the jailhouse interview, Gross told a U.S. consular officer "that (Cuban) officials quote, knew everything, end quote, before he was taken into custody and had asked for details of all his activities, i.e., the projects and companies he had worked for in the 54 countries he had traveled to during his 30 year career," the cable said, an indication Gross felt the island's security officials were monitoring him closely.
Gross asked whether any other U.S. citizens were in the same situation and whether his case was comparable to that of the so-called Cuban Five, a reference to the Cuban agents serving long prison terms in the United States for spying on militant anti-Castro exile groups. The consul general "did not respond to either of these questions," the cable said.
The message was dated Dec. 28, the same day as the visit, and sent out in the name of Jonathan Farrar, who at the time was the chief U.S. diplomat on the island.
Another cable sent Dec. 14, 2009, described a meeting between Farrar and the Cuban Foreign Ministry's director of North American affairs, Josefina Vidal, in which the latter promised consular access to Gross following two formal requests.
In the meeting, Farrar mentioned that U.S. diplomats "had sent two diplomatic notes requesting access to him, without response."
"Josefina Vidal said she had acted upon the first note but hadn't seen the second" ? a story that the cable's author called "unlikely."
Farrar stressed that "we need access to him per international conventions," and Vidal promised access later that week, the dispatch said.
Gross told the consul during the Dec. 28 visit that he was suffering from hypertension and an ulcer, and had fallen down and fainted, according to the other cable. He said he was being treated well and respectfully, was not being physically abused, and had been allowed to speak by phone to his wife, Judy, twice since his arrest in early December.
"However, he did reveal that the interrogation schedule had been very intense at first; he estimated that it had endured on average 2 hours daily," the cable read.
Gross said personal effects including his passport, two cell phones, an iPod and electronic adapters had been confiscated, and Cuban officials told him he was being charged with "contraband."
The missive did not say where Gross was incarcerated at the time, but said that he was sharing his cell with two other inmates and that the room had a television and a fan. More recently, Gross has been at a military hospital in the Cuban capital, according to people who have visited him.
Gross' final legal appeal was denied by the Cuban Supreme Court last month, leaving the U.S. government and his family hoping for a possible release on humanitarian grounds since several close family members have serious illnesses and Gross has apparently lost about 100 pounds (45 kilos) while in custody.
The leak of a vast archive of diplomatic communication has embarrassed officials around the world and even cost some their jobs, including the U.S. ambassador to Mexico.
