Coming soon: The separated-at-birth hits (Politico)

A source sends over this unreleased Web video from Senate candidate Steve Welch of Pennsylvania, which asks if Democratic Sen. Bob Casey was ?separated at birth? from President Barack Obama.

Except this one doesn?t just ask the question rhetorically. The video is a faux documentary exploring the possibility that Casey and Obama are related, featuring fictional experts such as behavioral scientist Dr. Arthur Herberstein and probability expert Dr. Milo Kamdermann.

The video is a clever and well produced new take on a familiar Republican attack line and a sign of things to come for swing-state Senate and House races next year.

Right now, a candidate like Welch ? a wealthy entrepreneur making his first bid for statewide office ? is looking to make a splash in a GOP primary. (Call him a "separated-at-birther"?) But this kind of hit against Casey sets the stage for a general election in which Obama?s coattails could very well be determinative.

UPDATE: Matt Canter, communications director for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, scoffed at the Welch attack. "Congrats to some consultant who made a pretty penny on a web video no one will see," Canter said.?"Can't wait to watch the next episode about Welch, the guy who actually voted for Obama and now pretends he is a tea partier. But Welch is only polling at one percent right now, so he would never warrant a web video."

S&P cuts Egypt sovereign rating (AP)

CAIRO ? Ratings agency Standard & Poor's says it has cut Egypt's sovereign credit rating, pushing it deeper into junk status on the back of the country's political turmoil and its weak economic profile.

S&P said Thursday it cut Egypt's long-term foreign and local currency sovereign ratings to B+ from BB-, with a negative outlook.

The agency says the cuts reflect its opinion that Egypt's "weak political and economic profile" had deteriorated further.

The cut comes after days of clashes between protesters and security forces in central Cairo ? battles that raised questions about the country's political situation days before the scheduled Nov. 28 parliamentary elections.

The vote is the first since former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power in February.

New Zealand votes as PM seeks outright majority (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? New Zealanders voted in national elections Saturday, with popular Prime Minister John Key seeking to propel his center-right party to the country's first outright parliamentary majority in years.

Polling stations closed at 7 p.m. local time (0600 GMT; 1 a.m. EST), with a winner expected to emerge by 10 p.m. (0900 GMT; 4 a.m. EST).

Both Key and his main opponent, Labour Party leader Phil Goff, cast their ballots early in Auckland polling stations. If either man had anything political to say, local media weren't reporting it ? thanks to a ban in New Zealand on election day coverage that might influence voters.

The coverage ban extends to signs and placards, which were all taken down overnight.

If opinion polls hold, Key's National Party would be the first party to secure a majority on its own since the country abolished a winner-take-all voting system and replaced it in 1996 with a proportional one that generally results in a more fractured parliament.

Anything short of a majority, however, and Key will need to find political partners to form a stable government.

What's not in doubt is Key's personal popularity ? despite a scandal in recent days over a recorded conversation. After three years in power, polls show the former currency trader is far more popular than Goff. Key has earned the nickname "Teflon John" for the way that nothing politically damaging seems to stick to him.

"He's a clever strategist and a good manager," said Jennifer Lees-Marshment, a political studies lecturer at the University of Auckland.

She said Key has been adept at knowing when to forge ahead with policies and when to pull back. His common touch was reassuring to people when a deadly earthquake struck Christchurch in February, she said, and enabled him to share in their excitement in October when the country's national All Blacks team won the Rugby World Cup.

Key's campaign has focused primarily on the economy. He's promising to bring the country back into surplus and begin paying down the national debt within three years. Part of his plan to achieve that is to sell minority stakes in four government-owned energy companies and in Air New Zealand.

That's where the center-left Labour party has found its biggest point of difference. Goff is promising not to sell anything and to raise money by other means, including by introducing a capital gains tax and by raising the age at which people get government pensions by two years to 67.

On the campaign trail, however, those issues got crowded out by a mini-scandal known as the teapot tape saga. While he met at tea shop with a political ally, Key reportedly made rude and embarrassing political comments that were captured on a recording device left by a cameraman.

The tape has never been publicly aired, although opponents, who may have been leaked transcripts, claim the prime minister said that elderly supporters of one opposition party were dying out and also disparaged the leadership of another party. Three days before the election, police began serving search warrants on four media outlets, seeking the tape and related material on the grounds that it is illegal to tape a private conversation.

The cameraman says he left the device inadvertently, and besides, the conversation could hardly be considered private given that media were invited there by Key for an earlier photo opportunity.

Lees-Marshment said she thinks voters grew tired of the attention given to the story and may have begun feeling more sympathetic toward Key.

"It became a story about the story," she said. "The voters got put off by it."

The saga certainly didn't seem to do much to boost the campaign of Goff, who was effectively shut out of any coverage for a few days. Labour's lackluster polling, about 28 percent, has pundits speculating Goff will be replaced as leader of the party within days of the election.

But the saga did seem to boost the fortunes of Winston Peters, who leads the small New Zealand First party. Peters grabbed the headlines with pointed criticism of Key over the affair and his poll numbers shot up.

Another winner in the election is likely to be the Green party, which is polling about 12 percent, putting it on target for its best ever showing.

Voters will also decide whether to keep their electoral system, in which parties get a proportion of parliamentary seats based on the proportion of the votes they receive. Some want to return to a winner-takes-all format, although polls indicate most favor sticking with their current system.

(This version corrects EST times of poll closings in paragraph 2. Recorrects GMT times.)

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs Safe for Long-Term Use, Study Finds (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Nov. 22 (HealthDay News) -- British researchers have good news for anyone taking the cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins: These drugs are effective and safe, even when used for long periods of time, they say.

The 11-year study found that simvastatin (brand name Zocor) reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by almost one-quarter. In addition, the researchers found no increase in illness or deaths from cancer or other non-vascular causes.

"All those at increased vascular risk should start taking statins early and continue taking them long term," said the study's lead author, Dr. Richard Bulbulia, a consultant vascular surgeon and research fellow in the clinical trial service unit at the University of Oxford in England.

"This will maximize the reductions in heart attacks, strokes and other vascular diseases, and is safe," said Bulbulia, who added that the study's findings should provide reassurance to physicians and their patients.

There are numerous other drugs in this class of medication, and Bulbulia said, "it seems reasonable to assume that [this study's findings] should hold true for other currently prescribed statins." Other commonly used statins include Lipitor, Crestor and Mevacor.

Results of the study are published in the Nov. 23 online issue of The Lancet. Funding for the study was provided by the U.K. Medical Research Council, the British Heart Foundation, Merck & Co. (manufacturer of Zocor) and Roche Vitamins.

The study looked at the long-term safety of simvastatin because some research suggested that the rates of some cancers and non-vascular health conditions were increased in people who had lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Initially, the study recruited more than 20,500 people who had a high risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular problems for a trial of simvastatin versus a placebo. The study volunteers were between 40 and 80 years old.

Half the group was randomly assigned to take 40 milligrams of simvastatin daily, while the other half took a placebo. At the end of the treatment phase of the trial, which lasted about five years, study participants were encouraged to continue on their study treatment for as long as another six years. About 17,500 of the initial participants continued in the follow-up phase, according to the report.

People taking simvastatin reduced their "bad" cholesterol an average of 1 millimole per liter over five years. This reduction translated into a 23 percent drop in the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, the researchers said. This benefit continued throughout the follow-up, reported the study.

When the researchers examined the data from the treatment and follow-up phases for evidence of any increases in non-vascular events, such as cancer, they found no significant differences between the two groups.

"Statin therapy appears safe, with no hazards, such as an excess risk of cancer or other major non-vascular morbidity or mortality emerging during the 11-year post-trial period," said Bulbulia.

Another expert praised statins' record.

"I think the statin drugs are an extraordinary class of medications, and a necessity in Western populations, where there is less physical exercise and more calorie consumption," said Dr. Howard Weintraub, clinical director of the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.

"These are very safe drugs, and this study demonstrates that safety, and that the vascular protection continues well beyond the termination of treatment," said Weintraub.

"I think the picture for cardiovascular disease would be very different if these drugs weren't a part of our armamentarium," he added.

Restraining order extended in Selena Gomez case (AP)

BURBANK, Calif. ? A civil judge extended a temporary restraining order Wednesday but refused to issue Selena Gomez a lengthier order against a man accused of stalking the singer-actress.

Superior Court Judge William Stewart said he will not grant a three-year restraining order while Thomas Brodnicki remains on a psychiatric hold unless he has assurances the man had an opportunity to be represented at a hearing.

Stewart did extend a temporary order requiring Brodnicki, 46, to stay 100 yards away from the "Wizards of Waverly Place" star until a Jan. 6 hearing.

Los Angeles Police Detective Jose Viramontes told Stewart that Brodnicki is in a hospital on an involuntary psychiatric hold and efforts are under way to place him under a conservatorship. Viramontes said those proceedings, which would place Brodnicki under court supervision and could establish a treatment plan, could take 10 months.

The judge said allowing Brodnicki time to contest the restraining order is a basic due process issue.

Gomez's attorney, Blair Berk, argued that Brodnicki had an opportunity to contest the order and briefly had a public defender in another case who could have handled the issue.

Another judge recently dropped a felony stalking charge against Brodnicki after determining prosecutors hadn't proven he had caused fear for the star.

Berk argued that the civil order was the only court protection for Gomez.

Gomez, 19, did not attend the hearing. She wrote in a sworn declaration that she was in extreme fear after learning that Brodnicki had threatened to kill her while he was on a previous psychiatric hold.

Prosecutors accused him of traveling to Los Angeles and stalking the actress between July and October.

Opera soprano Sena Jurinac dies aged 90 (omg!)

LONDON (Reuters) - Bosnian-born soprano Sena Jurinac, who made her name at the Vienna State Opera in the 1940s and 50s, has died aged 90, the opera house said on Wednesday.

She passed away on Tuesday at her home near Augsburg in southern Germany, it added in a statement.

"We mourn the passing of a legendary artist who not only had a lasting influence on the Vienna State Opera but on the entire opera world as well," said Dominique Meyer, director of the company.

Jurinac was born in Travnik in 1921, and after training and singing in Zagreb signed up to the Vienna State Opera.

Her debut there came in 1945, in the opera's first performance after the end of World War Two, as Cherubino in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro."

Among her most-performed roles in Vienna were Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier," Mimi in "La Boheme," Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni" and Elisabeth in "Don Carlos." She retired from the opera house in 1982.

Retail groups file suit over debit card fee rules (AP)

NEW YORK ? A coalition of retail groups sued the Federal Reserve on Tuesday, claiming the regulator ignored the law by setting too high a cap on the fees that banks can charge merchants for handling debit card purchases.

The National Retail Federation and other groups claimed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., that the Fed buckled under pressure from bank lobbyists when it set the cap at an average of about 24 cents per transaction in late June. The previously unregulated fees used to average around 44 cents.

The cap, which took effect Oct. 1, was initially proposed at 12 cents.

American Bankers Association CEO Frank Keating accused retailers of "seeking more profits from government price controls" by filing the suit, and maintained that retailers have not passed on the savings that resulted from the cap to their customers.

The merchant groups said that in raising the cap, the Fed considered expenses that the law did not allow. Their lawsuit maintains that the board dropped its earlier view that the only costs that should be considered in the fee were those involving the authorization, clearing and settlement of a transaction. Instead, the retailers claim, the Fed added costs, such as fraud losses, associated with a bank's debit card operations that were not included in the law.

The result is that merchants sometimes now pay more in debit transaction fees. One of the plaintiffs in the case, Miller Oil Co. of Norfolk, Va., which operates convenience stores and gas stations, used to pay about 16 cents per transaction in bank fees.

The suit maintains the cap is an "unreasonable interpretation" that exceeds the authority delegated to the Fed under the law. And it complains the Fed wrongly interpreted another provision of the law that requires merchants have a choice of which network handles their transaction.

The law, commonly known as the Durbin Amendment after Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin, who championed it, is part of the financial regulatory reform passed in July 2010.

Banks lobbied hard against the fee cap. They maintain it will cost them about $7 billion in annual revenue. Attempts to compensate for the loss to this and other regulations by charging customers monthly fees for using debit cards sparked a nationwide furor in recent months, leading the banks to drop their plans.

Minnesota-based TCF Bank dropped an earlier lawsuit challenging the legality of the Durbin Amendment a day after the Fed set the cap above its original proposal.

"The merchants are extremely frustrated," said Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director for U.S. Public Interest Research Group. "Our position in favor of reform has always been based on the fact that (shoppers) were subsidizing bank customer rewards because of a broken market.

"The Fed essentially didn't fix the market as much as Mr. Durbin and the merchants thought they would," Mierzwinski said.

A Fed spokeswoman said the regulator is aware of the lawsuit and will review it.

In addition to the National Retail Federation and Miller Oil, the suit was brought by the National Association of Convenience Stores, the Food Marketing Institute and Boscov's Department Store of Reading, Pa.

Mother of bomb suspect apologizes (Politico)

NEW YORK - The mother of a ?lone wolf? accused of plotting to attack police stations and post offices with homemade bombs apologized to New Yorkers on Monday, even as questions arose about why federal authorities - who typically handle terrorism cases - declined to get involved in what city officials called a serious threat.

The mother of Jose Pimentel spoke to reporters outside her upper Manhattan home the day after her son was arraigned in state court on terrorism-related charges.

?I didn?t raise my son in that way,? Carmen Sosa said. ?I feel bad about this situation.?

She also praised the New York Police Department, saying, ?I think they handled it well.?

Officials with the NYPD, which conducted the undercover investigation using a confidential informant and a bugged apartment, said the department had to move quickly because Pimentel was about to test a pipe bomb made out of match heads, nails and other ingredients bought at neighborhood hardware and discount stores.

Two law enforcement officials said Monday that the NYPD?s Intelligence Division had sought to get the FBI involved at least twice as the investigation unfolded. Both times, the FBI concluded that Pimentel lacked the mental capacity to act on his own, they said.

The FBI thought Pimentel ?didn?t have the predisposition or the ability to do anything on his own,? one of the officials said.

The officials were not authorized to speak about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity. The FBI?s New York office and the U.S. attorney?s office in Manhattan both declined to comment on Monday.

Pimentel?s lawyer, Joseph Zablocki, said his client was never a true threat.

?If the goal here is to be stopping terror ? I?m not sure that this is where we should be spending our resources,? he said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly defended the handling of the case Monday, saying the NYPD kept federal authorities in the loop ?all along? before circumstances forced investigators to take swift measures using state charges.

?No question in my mind that we had to take this case down,? Kelly said. ?There was an imminent threat.?

Added Kelly: ?This is a classic case of what we?ve been talking about - the lone wolf, an individual, self-radicalized. This is the needle in the haystack problem we face as a country and as a city.?

Authorities described Pimentel as an unemployed U.S. citizen and ?Al-Qaeda sympathizer? who was born in the Dominican Republic. He had lived most of his life in Manhattan, aside from about five years in the upstate city of Schenectady, where authorities say he had an arrested for credit card fraud.

Feds might investigate Sandusky as well

As the sports program at Syracuse University is being hit with allegations of abuse by one of its long-time coaches, more victims are coming forward claiming they suffered sexual abuse at the hands of former Penn State Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

The Penn State sex abuse scandal may soon become a federal case.

A senior law enforcement source tells NBC News that federal prosecutors and FBI agents in Pennsylvania are now ?looking hard? at whether to open up their own investigation because of allegations that former football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky crossed state lines to commit child abuse.?

One of the Pennsylvania state charges against Sandusky alleges that he flew one boy ? identified as Victim Number Four ? to the Outback Bowl in Tampa in 1998 and then again to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio in 1999. Starting when the boy was about 13 years old, Sandusky ?repeatedly? abused him, including at the bowl games, a grand jury report charges. When the boy resisted Sandusky?s advances, the grand jury indictment charges, the football coach threatened ?to send him home from the Alamo Bowl.?

The feds are also trying to determine whether Sandusky used the Internet to communicate or even recruit his victims?also grounds for the FBI to become involved. And a New York-based charity, the Fresh Air Fund, confirmed this week that it sent five children to live with Sandusky in the 1970s and one in the mid-1990s.?

?It would be inconceivable that we couldn?t find grounds? to make this a federal case, the official said.

The review of the Sandusky matter is being conducted by Peter J. Smith, the U.S. attorney in Harrisburg, Pa. In a public statement this week, he called the Sandusky allegations "extremely disturbing" because they involve the safety of children, and "therefore mandate a thorough review of all the facts and appropriate action by law enforcement at all levels, including federal agencies." Beyond supporting an ongoing inquiry by the Department of Education into the actions of Penn State officials, Smith added: "I can't comment about other specific areas of federal inquiry."?

Smith also offered federal assistance to Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, who is overseeing the state case. Her spokeswoman told NBC News that there are now regular ?communications? between the two offices.

The FBI is also making its resources?? including its crime lab and behavior analysis unit???available to investigators, a state police spokesman said.

Crosley Radio CR3001A Ranchero

They might not make things like they used to, but they at least design things to look like they used to. Crosley created the Radio Ranchero for exactly that purpose. It's a combination iPod dock and AM/FM radio that looks like it came straight out of the 1950s. There?s no doubt the retro Radio Ranchero looks cool, but at $199.95 (list), it should offer more than good looks. But few features and disappointing audio quality make this speaker dock a bit of a tough sell.

Design
The first thing you?ll notice about the Crosley Radio Ranchero is how strikingly retro it is. Rectangular and blocky, with glossy colored sides, the system is available in black, red, or green, the latter is an exclusive version you can only get at Urban Outfitters stores. There's also a large silver grille, and a big analog frequency meter with metal dials. It looks like it would be at home on a 1950s diner counter or kitchen table. The only modern concessionshows is an iPod dock on the top, with playback controls set into the bezel of the dock. The back is minimal, with only power, auxiliary 3.5mm, and coaxial antenna inputs.

The feature set on the Crosley Radio Ranchero is similarly minimal. It?s an iPod speaker dock with an AM/FM radio?and that's about it. There is no remote (despite playback controls sitting right in front of the iPod dock, where the iPod itself is clearly accessible), no display, not even a clock function. For a $200 speaker dock, it really doesn?t offer much beyond retro aesthetics. While not offering an iPod dock (but it works with auxiliary input), the Grace Digital Victoria Nostalgic Internet Radio ($229.99, 3 stars) includes a clock, a remote, and access to thousands of Internet radio stations while offering a similarly attractive retro design for just a little more.

Performance
Audio quality is disappointing for a $200 speaker dock. I listened to Charlie Mingus?s "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," and the usually crisp (despite the decades-old recording) piano notes sounded muddled and soft. It doesn?t sound terrible, but it also doesn?t sound satisfying for a speaker of its size and price.

Our standard bass track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," produced mixed results. While the flat bass notes got fairly loud and were distortion-free, any sort of textured bass (deep bass notes coming from an instrument, and not a flat low-frequency tone) suffered from heavy distortion.

If you love the 1950s aesthetic, the Crosley Radio Ranchero is a nice conversation piece. However, at $200 with no remote, significant connectivity, or even a clock, it falls fall short for the price. Its middling audio quality only makes it more disappointing, considering you can get more useful speaker docks for less and a much more functional and vintage-looking Internet radio for just a little bit more. For the same price as the Crosley Radio Ranchero you can get our Editors' Choice iPod dock, the Altec Lansing Octiv 650 ($199.95, 4 stars), which adds a useful app with EQ functions and better audio quality. If you have an iPhone or other iOS device, consider instead a wireless speaker, like the Logitech Wireless Boombox ($99.99, 3.5 stars). Both speakers offer better sound quality and a much more convenient experience, even if they don't have any retro appeal.

Facebook's porn and gore attack: Who gets the blame?

msnbc.com

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Some of it was just funny ? an image of Justin Bieber passionately singing into a man's ... um ... appendage pasted where the microphone should be.

Other hardcore porn images were of the banal fare so easily found outside Facebook's gated Internet community. But there was also the Newsfeed spam featuring child pornography reported by some. The bloody dead dog and decapitated corpses were also among the shocking fare Facebook users found themselves subjected to when the week began and the world's largest social network battled "a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability."

"XSS, as I suspected," Jay Ashworth, this computer geek I know from Facebook, said following confirmation of the days-long debate by security experts and civilians alike over what caused ? and who was behind ? the gore and porn spreading across the social network. An XSS scam ? or cross-site scripting ? is as common as Facebook scams come, spread largely because of uneducated and/or insatiably curious Facebook users tricked into copying and pasting offending JavaScript into a vulnerable browser.

Here's Facebook's official statement:

Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us, and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms. Recently, we experienced a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability. Our efforts have drastically limited the damage caused by this attack, and we are now in the process of investigating to identify those responsible.??

During this spam attack users were tricked into pasting and executing malicious JavaScript in their browser URL bar causing them to unknowingly share this offensive content. Our engineers have been working diligently on this self-XSS vulnerability in the browser. We've built enforcement mechanisms to quickly shut down the malicious Pages and accounts that attempt to exploit it. We have also been putting those affected through educational checkpoints so they know how to protect themselves. We've put in place backend measures to reduce the rate of these attacks and will continue to iterate on our defenses to find new ways to protect people.

Oh, and you can bet they are. While many users threatened to quit the site and made accusations that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg couldn't care less about the ick that might very well have caught the eye of Grandma and/or all those 11-year-olds parents allow to lie about their age to be on the social network, Facebook wants the nude splatter-fest out of your News Feed even more than you do. Because it's a business. Businesses are customarily not fans of outside influences that drive away customers. And therein ? as the much-abused Hamlet quote goes ? lies the rub.

While Facebook points to a flaw in a browser, it won't identify which browser allowed the malicious code to?spam violated Facebook accounts.?While naked people and blood splatter grabs the headlines, less sensational XSS and clickjacking scams such as tricking Facebook users into clicking on "Why were you tagged in this video?" or pasting code into browsers in the hopes of getting a free meal at Olive Garden are so quickly forgotten they're often repeated.

"The bigger question is what motivated the attackers to use this flaw in such a strange way?" Chester Wisniewski?of Sophos writes in the security company's Naked Security blog.?"We investigate lots of Facebook scams here at Naked Security, and I would guess that nearly 100 percent?of them lead to some financial payout for the scammer." Usually, scammers earn money when Facebook users are tricked into viewing advertising.

The latest outbreak "seems to be a purely malicious act," Wisniewski writes. "Facebook has a reputation for maintaining a reasonably family friendly environment and most Facebook users don't expect dead dogs and penises showing up on their wall."

The lack of monetary motivation has led security experts and others to speculate whether this was an attack by the hacker collective Anonymous, but there are no clues or confirmation. Facebook is letting it be known that it's on the case.

"In addition to the engineering teams that build tools to block spam we also have a dedicated enforcement team that has already identified those responsible?and is working with our legal team to ensure appropriate consequences follow," Facebook said in an email statement. The site cited two prominent anti-spam legal victories.

In 2009, Facebook successfully sued "Spam King? Sanford Wallace for spamming users' Facebook walls in a lawsuit that resulted in a $711 million judgment in the social network's favor and possible jail time for Wallace. In 2011, Facebook was awarded more than $360 million in statutory damages from spammer Philip Porembski, who grabbed the login info of at least 116,000 accounts, which he used to spam 7.2 million users.

Meanwhile, Facebook users can do a lot to prevent spam simply by not clicking on suspicious links. Viral scams persist on Facebook?because Facebook users continue to click malicious links.?Over the last year, Facebook stepped up its defenses?against these seemingly unstoppable pests by launching a variety of new security tools to help prevent spam and educate users.

To review, here are some things you can safely assume you won't see via Facebook: Osama bin Laden's body, that video of that thing Justin Bieber did to that girl, what happened when that girl's dad walked in on her, an app that reveals?who has?been looking at your profile, or any "authentic" message from Facebook WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS.

If you do get sucked into this or any Facebook spam scam, it's easy to remove the application, using Facebook settings, so that it no longer accesses your profile.?Here's how:

  • Remove any content the rogue app may have posted on your Facebook wall.
  • Go to the Account Settings drop-down menu in the upper right side of your screen.
  • From the Account Settings drop-down menu, choose Privacy Settings.
  • On the bottom right side of the Privacy Settings Page, click the Apps & websites link "Edit your settings."
  • On the App page, next to "Apps you use," select edit settings.
  • There you will see the third-party apps that have access to your Facebook profile. Delete any rogue applications. (It's a good idea to check this setting regularly, anyway.)
  • Send an apology to all your Facebook friends who may have been tagged, and advise them to do the same.
  • Join Facebook's Security page as well as the Sophos security page on Facebook to stay up-to-date on the latest security issues.

?More on the annoying way we live now:

?Helen A.S. Popkin?goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job on Twitter and/or Facebook.?Also, Google+.

Archeologists investigate Ice Age hominins' adaptability to climate change

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Computational modeling that examines evidence of how hominin groups evolved culturally and biologically in response to climate change during the last Ice Age also bears new insights into the extinction of Neanderthals. Details of the complex modeling experiments conducted at Arizona State University and the University of Colorado Denver will be published in the December issue of the journal Human Ecology, available online Nov. 17.

"To better understand human ecology, and especially how human culture and biology co-evolved among hunter-gatherers in the Late Pleistocene of Western Eurasia (ca. 128,000-11,500 years ago) we designed theoretical and methodological frameworks that incorporated feedback across three evolutionary systems: biological, cultural and environmental," said Michael Barton, a pioneer in the area of archaeological applications of computational modeling at Arizona State University.

"One scientifically interesting result of this research, which studied culturally and environmentally driven changes in land-use behaviors, is that it shows how Neanderthals could have disappeared not because they were somehow less fit than all other hominins who existed during the last glaciation, but because they were as behaviorally sophisticated as modern humans," said Barton, who is lead author of the published findings.

The paper "Modeling Human Ecodynamics and Biocultural Interactions in the Late Pleistocene of Western Eurasia" is co-authored by Julien Riel-Salvatore, an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado Denver; John Martin "Marty" Anderies, an associate professor of computational social science at ASU in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change and the School of Sustainability; and Gabriel Popescu, an anthropology doctoral student in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at ASU.

"It's been long believed that Neanderthals were outcompeted by fitter modern humans and they could not adapt," said Riel-Salvatore. "We are changing the main narrative. Neanderthals were just as adaptable and in many ways, simply victims of their own success."

The interdisciplinary team of researchers used archeological data to track behavioral changes in Western Eurasia over a period of 100,000 years and showed that human mobility increased over time, probably in response to environmental change. According to Barton, the last Ice Age saw hunter-gathers, including both Neanderthals and the ancestors of modern humans, range more widely across Eurasia searching for food during a major shift in the Earth's climate.

The scientists utilized computer modeling to explore the evolutionary consequences of those changes, including how changes in the movements of Neanderthals and modern humans caused them to interact ? and interbreed ? more often.

According to Riel-Salvatore, the study offered further evidence that Neanderthals were more flexible and resourceful than previously assumed.

"Neanderthals had proven that they could roll with the punches and when they met the more numerous modern humans, they adapted again," Riel-Salvatore said. "But modern humans probably saw the Neanderthals as possible mates. As a result, over time, the Neanderthals died out as a physically recognizable population."

To reach their conclusion, the researchers ran a computer program for the equivalent of 1,500 generations showing that as Neanderthals and modern humans expanded their yearly ranges, the Neanderthals were slowly absorbed by more numerous modern humans until they had disappeared as a recognizable population.

"We tested the modeling results against the empirical archaeological record and found that there is evidence that Neanderthals, and moderns, did adapt their behaviors in the way in which we modeled," explained Barton. "Moreover, the modeling predicts the kind of low-level genetic admixture of Neanderthal genes that are being found in the newest genetic studies just now being published.

"In other words, successful behavioral adaptations to severe environmental conditions made Neanderthals, and other non-moderns about whom we know little, vulnerable to biological extinction, but at the same time, ensured they made a genetic contribution to modern populations," Barton said.

The authors noted that "the methods we illustrate here offer a robust, new framework in which researchers can begin to examine the effects that such invisible characteristics could have on the observable record."

"The kind of modeling we did in this research is very new in paleoanthropology, as is the continental scope of the archaeological analysis we used to test the model results," noted Barton.

"However, such computational modeling can refine our understanding of long-term human impact on the environment that can help inform land-use decisions for our future," said Barton, who also is co-director of ASU's Center for Social Dynamics and Complexity, which leverages the emerging field of complex systems to foster interdisciplinary research on fundamental questions of social life.

The research presented in Human Ecology was supported in part by the National Science Foundation, a Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship and a Fulbright Graduate Student Fellowship.

Judge dismisses case against Selena Gomez stalker (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A judge on Wednesday dismissed the case against an Illinois man who was accused of stalking actress and singer Selena Gomez earlier this year, a court official said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Edmund Clarke Jr. ruled that Thomas Brodnicki, 46, "lacked specific intent" to cause Gomez fear, said District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.

She said prosecutors were now "evaluating our next step."

Brodnicki pleaded not guilty earlier this month to one felony charge alleging that he stalked the 19-year-old entertainer between July and October.

Another judge in the case earlier had granted a stay-away order against Brodnicki in October. Brodnicki allegedly told a psychiatrist he traveled to Los Angeles to see Gomez and had conversations with God about killing her, according to court documents.

Gomez is best known for her work on children's shows such as "Wizards of Waverly Place." She also is the girlfriend of teen singer Justin Bieber.

Report: 1 in 5 of US adults on behavioral meds (AP)

NEW YORK ? More than 20 percent of American adults took at least one drug for conditions like anxiety and depression in 2010, according to an analysis of prescription data, including more than one in four women.

The report, released Wednesday by pharmacy benefits manager Medco Health Solutions Inc., found that use of drugs for psychiatric and behavioral disorders rose 22 percent from 2001. The medications are most often prescribed to women aged 45 and older, but their use among men and in younger adults climbed sharply. In adults 20 to 44, use of antipsychotic drugs and treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder more than tripled, and use of anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax, Valium and Ativan rose 30 percent from a decade ago.

The statistics were taken from Medco's database of prescriptions and is based on 2.5 million patients with 24 months of continuous prescription drug insurance and eligibility.

The company said women are twice as likely as men to use anxiety treatments, as 11 percent of women 45 to 65 are on an anxiety medication. Women are also more likely than men to take antipsychotic drugs like Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Abilify, which treat disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. However, among men 20 to 64, use of the drugs has quadrupled over the last decade.

"There has been a significant uptick in the use of medications to treat a variety of mental health problems; what is not as clear is if more people ? especially women, are actually developing psychological disorders that require treatment, or if they are more willing to seek out help and clinicians are better at diagnosing these conditions than they once were," said Dr. David Muzina, a psychiatrist and national practice leader of Medco's Neuroscience Therapeutic Resource Center.

Pharmaceutical companies have also sought and received approvals to market their drugs to larger groups of people.

Drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are prescribed to boys more often than girls, but adult women now take the drugs more often than men. ADHD prescriptions to adult women grew 2.5 times from 2001. However ADHD prescriptions for children have been declining since 2005.

That reflects a decline in prescriptions for psychiatric and behavioral drugs for children. Medco found that prescriptions of those drugs for children have dropped since 2004, when the FDA warned they were linked to suicidal thoughts when used in people under 19. The company said less than 1 percent of children use antipsychotics drugs, although the figure has doubled since 2001.

In the "diabetes belt" states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama, about 23 percent of people are on at least one psychiatric or behavioral disorder drug. Diabetes is particularly widespread in those states and the condition is associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety disorders. The lowest rate of prescriptions was found in Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan, where less than 15 percent of people are using those medications.
