Mother of bomb suspect apologizes (Politico)

NEW YORK - The mother of a ?lone wolf? accused of plotting to attack police stations and post offices with homemade bombs apologized to New Yorkers on Monday, even as questions arose about why federal authorities - who typically handle terrorism cases - declined to get involved in what city officials called a serious threat.

The mother of Jose Pimentel spoke to reporters outside her upper Manhattan home the day after her son was arraigned in state court on terrorism-related charges.

?I didn?t raise my son in that way,? Carmen Sosa said. ?I feel bad about this situation.?

She also praised the New York Police Department, saying, ?I think they handled it well.?

Officials with the NYPD, which conducted the undercover investigation using a confidential informant and a bugged apartment, said the department had to move quickly because Pimentel was about to test a pipe bomb made out of match heads, nails and other ingredients bought at neighborhood hardware and discount stores.

Two law enforcement officials said Monday that the NYPD?s Intelligence Division had sought to get the FBI involved at least twice as the investigation unfolded. Both times, the FBI concluded that Pimentel lacked the mental capacity to act on his own, they said.

The FBI thought Pimentel ?didn?t have the predisposition or the ability to do anything on his own,? one of the officials said.

The officials were not authorized to speak about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity. The FBI?s New York office and the U.S. attorney?s office in Manhattan both declined to comment on Monday.

Pimentel?s lawyer, Joseph Zablocki, said his client was never a true threat.

?If the goal here is to be stopping terror ? I?m not sure that this is where we should be spending our resources,? he said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly defended the handling of the case Monday, saying the NYPD kept federal authorities in the loop ?all along? before circumstances forced investigators to take swift measures using state charges.

?No question in my mind that we had to take this case down,? Kelly said. ?There was an imminent threat.?

Added Kelly: ?This is a classic case of what we?ve been talking about - the lone wolf, an individual, self-radicalized. This is the needle in the haystack problem we face as a country and as a city.?

Authorities described Pimentel as an unemployed U.S. citizen and ?Al-Qaeda sympathizer? who was born in the Dominican Republic. He had lived most of his life in Manhattan, aside from about five years in the upstate city of Schenectady, where authorities say he had an arrested for credit card fraud.

Feds might investigate Sandusky as well

As the sports program at Syracuse University is being hit with allegations of abuse by one of its long-time coaches, more victims are coming forward claiming they suffered sexual abuse at the hands of former Penn State Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

The Penn State sex abuse scandal may soon become a federal case.

A senior law enforcement source tells NBC News that federal prosecutors and FBI agents in Pennsylvania are now ?looking hard? at whether to open up their own investigation because of allegations that former football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky crossed state lines to commit child abuse.?

One of the Pennsylvania state charges against Sandusky alleges that he flew one boy ? identified as Victim Number Four ? to the Outback Bowl in Tampa in 1998 and then again to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio in 1999. Starting when the boy was about 13 years old, Sandusky ?repeatedly? abused him, including at the bowl games, a grand jury report charges. When the boy resisted Sandusky?s advances, the grand jury indictment charges, the football coach threatened ?to send him home from the Alamo Bowl.?

The feds are also trying to determine whether Sandusky used the Internet to communicate or even recruit his victims?also grounds for the FBI to become involved. And a New York-based charity, the Fresh Air Fund, confirmed this week that it sent five children to live with Sandusky in the 1970s and one in the mid-1990s.?

?It would be inconceivable that we couldn?t find grounds? to make this a federal case, the official said.

The review of the Sandusky matter is being conducted by Peter J. Smith, the U.S. attorney in Harrisburg, Pa. In a public statement this week, he called the Sandusky allegations "extremely disturbing" because they involve the safety of children, and "therefore mandate a thorough review of all the facts and appropriate action by law enforcement at all levels, including federal agencies." Beyond supporting an ongoing inquiry by the Department of Education into the actions of Penn State officials, Smith added: "I can't comment about other specific areas of federal inquiry."?

Smith also offered federal assistance to Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, who is overseeing the state case. Her spokeswoman told NBC News that there are now regular ?communications? between the two offices.

The FBI is also making its resources?? including its crime lab and behavior analysis unit???available to investigators, a state police spokesman said.

Crosley Radio CR3001A Ranchero

They might not make things like they used to, but they at least design things to look like they used to. Crosley created the Radio Ranchero for exactly that purpose. It's a combination iPod dock and AM/FM radio that looks like it came straight out of the 1950s. There?s no doubt the retro Radio Ranchero looks cool, but at $199.95 (list), it should offer more than good looks. But few features and disappointing audio quality make this speaker dock a bit of a tough sell.

Design
The first thing you?ll notice about the Crosley Radio Ranchero is how strikingly retro it is. Rectangular and blocky, with glossy colored sides, the system is available in black, red, or green, the latter is an exclusive version you can only get at Urban Outfitters stores. There's also a large silver grille, and a big analog frequency meter with metal dials. It looks like it would be at home on a 1950s diner counter or kitchen table. The only modern concessionshows is an iPod dock on the top, with playback controls set into the bezel of the dock. The back is minimal, with only power, auxiliary 3.5mm, and coaxial antenna inputs.

The feature set on the Crosley Radio Ranchero is similarly minimal. It?s an iPod speaker dock with an AM/FM radio?and that's about it. There is no remote (despite playback controls sitting right in front of the iPod dock, where the iPod itself is clearly accessible), no display, not even a clock function. For a $200 speaker dock, it really doesn?t offer much beyond retro aesthetics. While not offering an iPod dock (but it works with auxiliary input), the Grace Digital Victoria Nostalgic Internet Radio ($229.99, 3 stars) includes a clock, a remote, and access to thousands of Internet radio stations while offering a similarly attractive retro design for just a little more.

Performance
Audio quality is disappointing for a $200 speaker dock. I listened to Charlie Mingus?s "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," and the usually crisp (despite the decades-old recording) piano notes sounded muddled and soft. It doesn?t sound terrible, but it also doesn?t sound satisfying for a speaker of its size and price.

Our standard bass track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," produced mixed results. While the flat bass notes got fairly loud and were distortion-free, any sort of textured bass (deep bass notes coming from an instrument, and not a flat low-frequency tone) suffered from heavy distortion.

If you love the 1950s aesthetic, the Crosley Radio Ranchero is a nice conversation piece. However, at $200 with no remote, significant connectivity, or even a clock, it falls fall short for the price. Its middling audio quality only makes it more disappointing, considering you can get more useful speaker docks for less and a much more functional and vintage-looking Internet radio for just a little bit more. For the same price as the Crosley Radio Ranchero you can get our Editors' Choice iPod dock, the Altec Lansing Octiv 650 ($199.95, 4 stars), which adds a useful app with EQ functions and better audio quality. If you have an iPhone or other iOS device, consider instead a wireless speaker, like the Logitech Wireless Boombox ($99.99, 3.5 stars). Both speakers offer better sound quality and a much more convenient experience, even if they don't have any retro appeal.

Facebook's porn and gore attack: Who gets the blame?

msnbc.com

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Some of it was just funny ? an image of Justin Bieber passionately singing into a man's ... um ... appendage pasted where the microphone should be.

Other hardcore porn images were of the banal fare so easily found outside Facebook's gated Internet community. But there was also the Newsfeed spam featuring child pornography reported by some. The bloody dead dog and decapitated corpses were also among the shocking fare Facebook users found themselves subjected to when the week began and the world's largest social network battled "a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability."

"XSS, as I suspected," Jay Ashworth, this computer geek I know from Facebook, said following confirmation of the days-long debate by security experts and civilians alike over what caused ? and who was behind ? the gore and porn spreading across the social network. An XSS scam ? or cross-site scripting ? is as common as Facebook scams come, spread largely because of uneducated and/or insatiably curious Facebook users tricked into copying and pasting offending JavaScript into a vulnerable browser.

Here's Facebook's official statement:

Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us, and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms. Recently, we experienced a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability. Our efforts have drastically limited the damage caused by this attack, and we are now in the process of investigating to identify those responsible.??

During this spam attack users were tricked into pasting and executing malicious JavaScript in their browser URL bar causing them to unknowingly share this offensive content. Our engineers have been working diligently on this self-XSS vulnerability in the browser. We've built enforcement mechanisms to quickly shut down the malicious Pages and accounts that attempt to exploit it. We have also been putting those affected through educational checkpoints so they know how to protect themselves. We've put in place backend measures to reduce the rate of these attacks and will continue to iterate on our defenses to find new ways to protect people.

Oh, and you can bet they are. While many users threatened to quit the site and made accusations that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg couldn't care less about the ick that might very well have caught the eye of Grandma and/or all those 11-year-olds parents allow to lie about their age to be on the social network, Facebook wants the nude splatter-fest out of your News Feed even more than you do. Because it's a business. Businesses are customarily not fans of outside influences that drive away customers. And therein ? as the much-abused Hamlet quote goes ? lies the rub.

While Facebook points to a flaw in a browser, it won't identify which browser allowed the malicious code to?spam violated Facebook accounts.?While naked people and blood splatter grabs the headlines, less sensational XSS and clickjacking scams such as tricking Facebook users into clicking on "Why were you tagged in this video?" or pasting code into browsers in the hopes of getting a free meal at Olive Garden are so quickly forgotten they're often repeated.

"The bigger question is what motivated the attackers to use this flaw in such a strange way?" Chester Wisniewski?of Sophos writes in the security company's Naked Security blog.?"We investigate lots of Facebook scams here at Naked Security, and I would guess that nearly 100 percent?of them lead to some financial payout for the scammer." Usually, scammers earn money when Facebook users are tricked into viewing advertising.

The latest outbreak "seems to be a purely malicious act," Wisniewski writes. "Facebook has a reputation for maintaining a reasonably family friendly environment and most Facebook users don't expect dead dogs and penises showing up on their wall."

The lack of monetary motivation has led security experts and others to speculate whether this was an attack by the hacker collective Anonymous, but there are no clues or confirmation. Facebook is letting it be known that it's on the case.

"In addition to the engineering teams that build tools to block spam we also have a dedicated enforcement team that has already identified those responsible?and is working with our legal team to ensure appropriate consequences follow," Facebook said in an email statement. The site cited two prominent anti-spam legal victories.

In 2009, Facebook successfully sued "Spam King? Sanford Wallace for spamming users' Facebook walls in a lawsuit that resulted in a $711 million judgment in the social network's favor and possible jail time for Wallace. In 2011, Facebook was awarded more than $360 million in statutory damages from spammer Philip Porembski, who grabbed the login info of at least 116,000 accounts, which he used to spam 7.2 million users.

Meanwhile, Facebook users can do a lot to prevent spam simply by not clicking on suspicious links. Viral scams persist on Facebook?because Facebook users continue to click malicious links.?Over the last year, Facebook stepped up its defenses?against these seemingly unstoppable pests by launching a variety of new security tools to help prevent spam and educate users.

To review, here are some things you can safely assume you won't see via Facebook: Osama bin Laden's body, that video of that thing Justin Bieber did to that girl, what happened when that girl's dad walked in on her, an app that reveals?who has?been looking at your profile, or any "authentic" message from Facebook WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS.

If you do get sucked into this or any Facebook spam scam, it's easy to remove the application, using Facebook settings, so that it no longer accesses your profile.?Here's how:

  • Remove any content the rogue app may have posted on your Facebook wall.
  • Go to the Account Settings drop-down menu in the upper right side of your screen.
  • From the Account Settings drop-down menu, choose Privacy Settings.
  • On the bottom right side of the Privacy Settings Page, click the Apps & websites link "Edit your settings."
  • On the App page, next to "Apps you use," select edit settings.
  • There you will see the third-party apps that have access to your Facebook profile. Delete any rogue applications. (It's a good idea to check this setting regularly, anyway.)
  • Send an apology to all your Facebook friends who may have been tagged, and advise them to do the same.
  • Join Facebook's Security page as well as the Sophos security page on Facebook to stay up-to-date on the latest security issues.
